The Radical Queer Semaine works to build and maintain an inclusive safer space, a welcoming and inclusive space where everyone’s mental, physical and emotional well-being are prioritized, and where support is available to those who need it.

Steps taken by RQS to create this safer space :

• no one will be turned away for lack of funds

• venues as accessible as possible, and the degree of accessibility indicated for each event

• non-gendered restrooms

• being open for specific needs

• confronting and stopping oppressive behavior, including but not limited to sexism, racism, cissexism, transphobia, heterosexism, ageism, ableism, classism and sizeism.

• safer space team at parties that you can call and ask for help, in a non-discriminating atmosphere

If you experience oppressive behavior, harassment, abuse, assault, or any other kind of violence while at our events, or if someone who is engaging or has engaged in such behavior is adversely affecting your participation, or if for any other reason you need support (personal or interpersonal problems linked to any form of discrimination or oppression, help needed for any reason), please contact the SAFER SPACE TEAM! They will be present during events to do active listening, look for solutions with you or simply give emotional support. These volunteers will be easily recognizable and can be reached by phone or text through a phone number that will be displayed in the space.

The safer space policy aims to break isolation and encourage accountability and self-determination. We hope that everyone can feel comfortable and valued in the spaces that we create. The policy has a preventive component, as it encourages everyone to reflect on their own needs, privileges and boundaries, and those of others. The safer space team volunteers aren’t there to repress or blame anyone, and that’s the reason why they will only intervene in a given situation if they have been asked to do so. If members of the safer space team judge that a person is VISIBLY uncomfortable, they can take the initiative to go speak to that person but they will not intervene in any way if the person doesn’t explicitly ask them to. If you are asked to leave an event in accordance with this policy, please do so immediately.

We strive to be survivor centric and survivor oriented, and we wish to always prioritize survivors’ needs. If you are a survivor and would like to make special provisions for this event beforehand, contact radical.queer.semaine@gmail.com.

Please spread this information widely. If you have any questions as to whether or not this safer space policy prevents you from attending the event, please contact radical.queer.semaine@gmail.com.

This workshop introduces the concept of Pinkwashing and develops strategies for queer activism against it. Pinkwashing is the cynical use of gay rights, in this case by the Israeli state, to divert attention from the violation of other rights. For example, through Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank, structural discrimination against Palestinians and other non-Jewish citizens of Israel, the expansion of illegal settlements, and the construction of the apartheid wall.

This workshop proposes an exploration of different body postures and how they’re linked to our perceptions of what’s masculine and what’s feminine. How do we move in public areas? In which ways does the way we move is gendered? Do our body movements agree with the way we picture gender and with our own gender identity? The workshops aims to sensibilize and reflect on internalized gender norms and on how we can change our mindset from gender categorization to a more inclusive approach.
In this workshop, the MOUSTACHES propose to reflect on the links inbetween the notions of self-care and safer space through a «time wasting» collective origa(s)mic. Queering time, is it possible? We would like to talk about all of this by framing it around a useless workshop, un-productive and relaxing (in principle!), of paper folding. We wish to extract ourselves, for a short while, from dichotomies of activists/non-activists, art/crafting, artists/activists, hairy/shaved to discuss, together of the roots of marginalization in our everyday lives.

Videoqueer: it gets better… organized! Is an initiative of Project 10 and the Radical Queer Semaine. Because thing don’t get better own their own, this project looks to supply youth of all sexual orientations and gender identities with the tools needed to self organize and to be heard. We invite you to the launch of the film “How to Organize a Flash Mob”. This movie is based on the experience on young activists from Montreal who participated in a workshop last August on resisting the criminalization of HIV by interrupting images with artistic actions. This short film will be followed by the film “United in Anger”, which retraces the strategies and actions of ACT-UP New York, an activist group who changed the face of the HIV epidemic. Discussion will follow. This project was made possible by a grant from the minister of Justice as part of the campaign against homophobia.

“résistance/résidence” is an evening of queer art and performances with and by people of color in Montreal. With the ardent desire to create an artistic space where battles, failures and victories can be expressed, alongside desires and dreams of decolonization, narratives of migration, nostalgia and demystification of the nation, this evening showcases artists who had to rethink their queer sense of belonging in light of racialized experiences.

Her 2011 album Act of Treason was produced by Kevin Lynn of Minotaurs, King Cobb Steelie (and Holy F*ck alumni) and is a gutsy garage-folk album a la PJ Harvey or (who are we kidding) Cat Ritter. She’s toured with Sockfoot, Vivek Shraya, Jay Brannan, Ingrid Gatin and many others. She’ll be recording an EP of ukulele ballads in Sydney, Australia in September.

For the RADICAL QUEER SEMAINE, the Montreal Dyke March collective invites you to a workshop-discussion to prepare the 2013 Dyke March taking place on August 8th!

★★★ On August 14th, the first Marche des Lesbiennes/Dyke March of Montreal, a non-mixt march by and for dykes took place. In the spirit of the first Dyke March organized by the Lesbian Avengers in 1993 at Washington, Montreal’s Dyke March that is antiracist, antipatriarchy and anticapitalist aims to bring together and make visible dykes in all their diversity. A little less then a year ago, for that march a thousand dykes of different horizons, identities and life experiences took the streets.

★ Organized by a new collective of dyke activists with principles of horizontal and anti-oppression organizing, this mobilizing and historic event managed to bring together not only people who identify as dykes but who also have multiple identities: constructed, deconstructed, reconstructed, revendicated, rejected (lesbophobia, racism, misoginy, butchphobia, transmisogyny, transphobia, ablism, classism, etc.), collective, individual, fixed, fluid, intersectional, complex, imposed, linked to systems of oppression, chosen and reclaimed (queer, butch, sissy, etc). ★ This workshop-discussion will also be the time to collectively discuss how we can ally the fight against lesbophobia and the fight against other specific oppression that we have to work through: transphobia, racism, sexism, biphobia, butchphobia, femphobia.

▼ This discussion will be Dyke-Only ▼

★ This space is open to anyone who identifies as lesbian/dyke/gouine: womyn that are cis, trans or intersex that identify as lesbian, bisexual or queer as well as people who have a non-binary gender identity and who identify as lesbian, genderqueer, two-spirited, fluid or intersex.
★ People that are questionning are welcomed.
★ This workshop is not opened to allies who don’t identify as dykes. We thank them for their solidarity and support and ask them to respect this non-mixt space.

▼★▼ COME HAVE A DRINK WITH US AFTER ▼★▼
Following this workshop-discussion there will be a 5 à 7. The location will be annouced during the workshop.

We are really exited to share this reflection space with you!

As the boundaries of sexual and other forms of criminalisation shift, what has happened to the queer critique of the criminal justice system and its enforcers? In the context of community policing and its public-relations practices, what are possible responses to their queer-cop reconciliation campaigns? This workshop and discussion will take on this question in hopes of maintaining the lineage of queer anti-police organising and resisting the partitioning of well-behaved queers from ‘real’ criminals, sexual or otherwise.

We, the Radical Queer Semaine (RQS) Montréal, stand in solidarity with Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and we invite you to participate in this year’s Memorial March ** on 14th February – 18:00h- St. Laurent metro **

FROM THE FACEBOOK PAGE:

Justice for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (Missing Justice) invites you and yours to attend, spread the word about, and participate in this year’s Memorial March for Missing and Murdered Women on Thursday February 14th, 6pm at St. Laurent metro.

The first women’s memorial march was held in 1991 in response to the murder of a Coast Salish woman on Powell Street in Vancouver. Her name is not spoken today out of respect for the wishes of her family. Out of this sense of hopeless…ness and anger came an annual march on Valentine’s Day to express compassion, community, and caring for all women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, Unceded Coast Salish Territories. Twenty-two years later, the women’s memorial march continues to honour the lives of all missing and murdered women.

This year, Montreal holds it’s 4th Annual Memorial March.
